Abstract: The National University of Laos was established in 1995 after merging 10 higher education institutes formerly supervised by different ministries in Vientiane Capital as the result of reforming higher education in Lao PDR. The main mission of NUOL is to provide higher educational service to society in accordance with the government needs in socio-economic sustainable development by promoting and performing research in natural, Social Sciences and environment; preserving and expanding the arts, culture and tradition of ethnic diversity and; providing academic services to the society. According to Decree No. 87/PM dated 20/06/2000, the roles of NUOL are teaching-learning, conducting research for national development or government projects and providing academic services to society and industrial development. Since the opening of its first academic year on the 5th November 1996, the number of students is increasing dramatically.
