This paper describes the results of a survey undertaken to determine the food consumption patterns and nutrient intakes of Singapore school children. Data on foods and drinks taken in a 24 hour period by 1 239 primary four school children in nine primary schools are given. In general, it was found that the largest food group consumed was cereal and cereal products with rice as the major contributor. Green leafy vegetables were the main vegetables taken.

Food habits are being formed while the population is still young, and foods which are taken at school contribute a specific part of the children's dietary intake. The pattern of food habits of children in the primary school was studied. The types of foods sold in the school canteens were reviewed and the nutritional values of these foods were evaluated. The preliminary findings from some of the schools surveyed are presented in this paper.
