dc.description.abstract | During conventional orthodontic treatment, it is common for extrinsic stains to accumulate. While some manufacturers recommend using whitening dentifrices to combat this issue, the effectiveness of such toothpaste is not entirely clear. Furthermore, the excessive use of whitening dentifrice may the fixed appliance's effectiveness. The purpose of this in-vitro study was to assess and compare the efficacy of a newly developed whitening dentifrice, Dentaklin White (TG), to Colgate Total® Whitening (CG), utilising a toothbrushing simulator machine. Forty enamel specimens were prepared and divided into four groups (A, B, C, & D). In Group A & B, orthodontic brackets were attached to the enamel specimens and were then stained with a mixture of coffee, tea, and chlorhexidine. A short 0.019 x 0.025” SS archwire was ligated onto the brackets subsequently. All the specimens were subjected to toothbrushing simulator for specific durations. In groups A and B, the CIE L*a*b* colour change (ΔE) was evaluated using digital image analysis at T1 (2 weeks), T2 (4 weeks), and T3 (12 weeks) compared to T0 (baseline). Archwire roughness was analysed using a profilometer at T4 (2 years) compared to T0. For groups C and D, enamel surface roughness was analysed at T5 (8.5 years) compared to T0, using TG and CG dentifrice. The results indicated that there was a significant change in tooth colour associated with brushing duration for both CG and TG (p < 0.05) with no significant difference between the two dentifrices (p > 0.05). Both CG and TG dentifrices significantly removed more stains at the occlusal and gingival brackets (p < 0.05). Both whitening dentifrices resulted in increased wire surface roughness and enamel surface roughness (p < 0.05) with no statistically significant difference between them (p > 0.05). In summary, Dentaklin White (TG) was found to have equal efficacy as Colgate Total® Whitening (CG) in removing extrinsic stains and can be recommended for use during orthodontic treatment. | en_US |
