Energy is a vital aspect in our life and the world energy consumption is ever growing day by day. Thin film solar cells that use thin layers are becoming more promising photovoltaic devices as far as cost and conversion efficiency are concerned. The polycrystalline cadmium telluride (CdTe) thin film based solar cells have shown better prospects for low cost and large scale solar PV energy source. The main objective of this work is to investigate the feasibility of the new buffer layer for better ohmic back contact in CdTe solar cells. The entire research has three main parts: numerical analysis of CdTe based solar cells, deposition and fabrication by low vacuum thermal evaporation and evaluations by different characterization techniques. Practically, this work aims to synthesize the CdTe:Tex at different concentration (x=0.5, 0.6, 0.75 and 0.9) of tellurium. Then, thermally evaporated CdTe:Te layer of all concentrated samples are deposited on CdTe absorber layer of CdS/ CdTe solar cell with screen printed Cu:C/Ag back contact in the configuration of Glass/FTO/CdS/CdTe/CdTe:Tex/Cu:C/Ag.Various CdTe thin films were also deposited by low vacuum thermal evaporation for optimized fabrication. Fabrication of CdTe based complete solar cells were accomplished by thermal annealing treatment for cadmium chloride (CdCl2) treatment. The best PV performance was achieved for CdTe thin film solar cell at the tellurium concentration of x=0.5, where the conversion efficiency was 4.92%, open circuit voltage (Voc) 630 mV, short circuit current density (Jsc) 16.62 mA/cm2 and fill factor (FF) 47% were achieved. However, the PV performance without buffer layer (where, x=0 forCdTe:Tex) finds Voc=686 mV, Jsc=9.66 mA/cm2, FF=39.8% and the conversion efficiency η=2.64 %. Moreover, Cadmium Sulphide (CdS) thin film as window layer was deposited using the CdS powder recycled from the chemical bath deposition (CBD) residue. All these results pave the way for solving some fundamental issues in CdTe based solar cell fabrication, which however needed more rigorous optimization in process parameters to lead to commercialization.,Ph.D.-
