dc.description | The research focused on the political manipulations as both ethnic and political apparatus of the political leaders and elites in causing ethnic conflict in northern region of Nigeria. This is a case study of Kano and Kaduna which explored the case of ethnic conflict in a different perspective to realize that conflict can be the result of power manipulations from political leaders/elites resulting in commotion and violence that eventually dragged in many innocent people. The main objective of this study is to identify the role of power manipulators and their involvements in ethnic conflicts in northern region. Second, to examine how political manipulators are using ethnicity in manipulating the northern states. Third, to ascertain the causes of ethnic conflicts and the group involve in the northern states and, fourth to examine the impact on the northern region. In this study, the conflict and political process approach introduced by Conn (1971) had been used to explain the relationship between conflict and political power manipulations. This approach is further modified to be consistent with this research questions about how far political power manipulations has caused ethnic conflict in the north and in Nigeria at large. Data was collected through an integrated qualitative and quantitative method. A total of 500 respondents were sampled, involving 300 from Kano and 200 from Kaduna. Among them, a total of 60 were selected to be informant and were interviewed. This study shows that there are some root causes of conflict in northern states such as politics, religion, economic, social and culture.
