The authorities in construction industry development board are eager to use more efficient, faster, and safer methods of construction because of rapid population growth. This demand can be satisfied by the utilization of factory made quality controlled precast units that provides for faster construction leading to saving in time and construction cost. One of these methods is by adopting Industrialized Building System (IBS) which was started in Malaysia in 2002. Earthquakes are natural disasters which have caused a lot of infrastructural damage and loss to human lives. In the past earthquakes, the cost effective precast structural systems had not performed well. The failure of the precast structures was attributed to the poor performance of connections. Precast concrete structural systems displaying non-linear response characteristics can be broadly classified into two main categories as monolithic systems and precast systems. For the past four decades though a lot of research has been carried out on the behavior of precast structures, a complete understanding the behavior of precast beam-column connections under cyclic loading is still limited. It was found from the latest earthquake that most collapse of precast buildings was caused by the failure of connections due to poor behavior in seismic region. Therefore, an extensive research should be carried out to improve the cyclic behavior of precast concrete connections. The main objective of the study was to investigate different detailing of connections in an exterior precast concrete beam-column connection subject to cyclic loading. The present study aims at investigating experimentally and numerically the cyclic behavior of hidden corbel concrete beamcolumn connections which proposed and were tested in Construction Industry Development Board Malaysia (CIDB) under cyclic loading conditions and to identify an ideal dry joint that would perform efficiently in seismic zones. In the present study, two types of precast concrete beam column connections and a monolithic specimen were considered. The precast concrete beam column elements were connected with steel box that hold the beam and column attached with the bolts and rods. In type I, the connection steel box built with cleat angle plate that joint to column (HCC) and in type II, the connection of beam and column connected with dowel in a steel box (HCCU) only but the joint interface is far from the shear zone near to column surface. All the specimens were tested under constant axial load on the upper end of the column and with cyclic load at the end of the beam. Parametric study was also performed on the precast specimens using finite element package ABAQUS and the experimental results were validated with the results obtained from the finite element models as well. The experimental results matched well with the numerical results. From the study, it was observed that precast specimens HCC and HCCU performed satisfactory in terms of ductility and energy dissipation when compared to the reference monolithic specimen (ML). The load carrying capacity of the connection with cleat angle stiffener (HCC) is higher when compared to other precast specimens. Compared to the monolithic specimen ML, the specimen HCC exhibited only 107.34 % and 51.7 % increase in the load carrying capacity in the upward and downward direction respectively. The specimen HCC exhibited 71.27 % increase and 29.34 % decrease in the load carrying capacity in the upward and downward direction respectively when compared with precast specimen HCCU. All the precast specimens studied with finite element method have shown similar trend as those of HCC and HCCU being tested in the post elastic range up to the ultimate load.,Ph.D.-
