Berdasarkan dapatan analisis keperluan, spesifikasi ujian dibangunkan. The aim of this study is to develop a test of written communication to screen new recruits at a Malaysian multinational corporation. The test development process was carried out in two main stages: design and operationalization. At the design stage, a needs analysis was carried out to identify the role of English in the target language domain. This was carried out through interviews with six informants and a questionnaire survey involving 31 respondents to identify the patterns of language use. Document analysis of written correspondences transmitted over the in-house electronic mail system was also carried out. These documents were categorised according to genre, underlying purpose and language function. Based on the findings of the needs analysis, test specifications were drawn up. The operationalization stage involved the construction of four writing tasks that reflected the needs of the target domain. The tasks require test takers to utilise specific language functions to write emails. The prototype tasks were moderated by a language testing expert and a workplace informant and then trialled on 55 students. In order to determine the expectations of the workplace regarding new employees' writing, selected benchmarked answer scripts were given to four workplace informants for them to assess their suitability and acceptability. The findings were used to ascertain the criteria of the rating scale and establish cut-off points. The rating scale was then used by three raters to mark the scripts. Rater reliability was found to be moderate. Based on the validation evidence collected throughout the test development process, the writing test should be able to screen suitable new intakes at the targeted workplace.,PhD | - |
