dc.descriptionThe thesis is concerned with the ultimate shear strength and behaviour of steel- concrete composite plate girders with or without web openings. Tension field action in the web coupled with composite action between the reinforced concrete slab and the plate girder results in complex behaviour of composite plate girders. Analysis of such behaviour is so complicated that it is necessary to have a simple method for design office use. Therefore, a simple analytical method to determine the shear strength and to examine the effects of various parameters on the shear strength of composite plate girders with or without web openings is proposed herein in the thesis. The method considers the effects of composite action between the concrete slab and steel part of the girder and also the presence of openings in the webs. Contributions to the shear strength of the girder by tension field action in the plate girder web panel and shear failure of concrete slab are accounted for in the analysis. The method is approximate and, the accuracy of the method is established by comparing the predicted values with the corresponding experimental and finite element results obtained from various sources. Results presented in the thesis include also those obtained from an experimental programme carried out as part of the project. In this project, ten composite plate girders with circular or square web openings were tested to failure in order to study their ultimate load behaviour. The girders were simply supported and subjected to two concentrated loads applied at third points such that the two end panels containing openings were under predominantly shear with the middle panel under pure bending. The effect of web openings on the ultimate load behaviour of composite plate girders is primary concern of the study. Extensive strain measurements were made on the web panels in order to measure the extent of tension field action. Test results show that the ultimate shear strength drops marginally in girders with smaller openings but the drop is significant in girders with larger openings, larger than 0.3d, d being the web depth. All test specimens were also analysed using an analytical method and the finite element modelling and, the predicted results compared with the corresponding experimental values.
