The turmoil-filled world of work has aroused challenges in tackling psychological stress related health consequences as a result of work environment and individual factors interaction. Although both anger and forgiveness as personality traits were explored extensively in multiple fields of research, it has rarely been examined in the context of the work-personality interaction. This study aims to determine the interaction between work environment factors and anger-forgiveness personality traits in predicting psychological job stress, uncontrolled eating behaviour and cardiovascular risk among male employees in private sectors in Malaysia. A cross sectional study of 492 male employees from multi-worksites had completed self-administered questionnaires in addition to non laboratory cardiovascular risk assessment. The questionnaires used were Psychosocial Safety Climate-12, Spielberger Trait Anger Scale, Forgiveness Personality Inventory, Demand-Induced Strain Compensation, Oldenburg Burnout Inventory-Exhaustion and Three Factor Eating Questionnaire-Uncontrolled Eating domain. Multiple Regression technique was used to examine how the effect of work environment factors on employees' health differs according to anger-forgiveness personality traits profile. This study found significant independent predictors for psychological job stress were psychosocial safety climate, emotional and physical job demands, cognitive job resources, and forgiveness personality trait. The significant independent predictors for uncontrolled eating behaviour were high anger and low forgiveness personality traits. Low anger-high forgiveness as personality traits profile was the best hypothetical profile for reducing psychological job stress and uncontrolled eating behaviour on exposure to job demands. High anger-low forgiveness as personality traits profile was more susceptible to psychological job stress and uncontrolled eating behaviour compared to high anger-high forgiveness as personality traits profile on exposure to job demands. Joint effect of high anger trait and high uncontrolled eating behaviour had increased the probability of cardiovascular risk 10% and more on exposure to high psychological job stress. High job resources were beneficial for high anger-high forgiveness reduce psychological job stress with exemption of uncontrolled eating behaviour. In this occupational group of Malaysian male, work environment factors interact with the anger-forgiveness personality traits profile in predicting employees' health. Matching the job demands and job resources with the personality traits profile may reduce trait-related health outcomes.,PhD | - |
