Description: Recently, the concept of mindfulness has attracted numerous researchers across multiple disciplines (Leung et al. 2013; Ndubisi 2012). However, research on mindfulness in information system (IS) use at post-adoptive phase remains limited. Mindfulness is defined as the process of paying attention on what is happening, being constantly aware of what we are doing and the consequences of actions, and observing the stimuli without relying on outdated category of actions that may reduce user’s attention levels. Being mindful in IS use helps improve IS users’ awareness to maximise the benefits of IS, particularly in confronting with auto-pilot or routinised actions. A close reading of reference literatures in understanding the phenomenon of IS use revealed that most of the prior studies have been drawn up around the IS adoption and diffusion models that are associated with reflective cognitive processing (such as rational decision, emotional decision and habitual decision) on pre-adoption activities, adoption decision, initial use at post-adoptive phase and IS replacement decisions. Although there has been a growing body of literature conducted to understand behavioural changes in IS use at post-adoptive phase, these researches generally framed around the same set of factors that leads to the adoption and initial use of the technology. It is argued that employing the existing models at post-adoptive phase is not sufficient as it would give an implication on the success of the IS implementation. In addition, the evidence revealed that IS users have not successfully extracted the business value of IS innovation and they have failed to utilise the benefits of the technology. Underutilising the benefits of IS contributes to negative consequences on organisational performance and competitive advantage. Realising on the gap in the literatures, highlighting the phenomena of mindfulness in IS use of post-adoptive phase in a mandatory IS use organisation is important. A case study approach is employed as a way of conducting qualitative inquiry instead of ethnography, phenomenology and grounded theory as it suits the purpose to gain in-depth understanding of the role of mindfulness in IS. In order to discover the ontological and epistemological aspects of the social inquiry, the method that is used in this research is the qualitative method. The study found that the development of mindfulness is categorised into two categories: i) individual-level, which comprise of openness to new information and knowledge in IS, awareness on IS threats, attentiveness to tasks and IS complexity, consciousness to collaborate with expertise, and awareness of business and IS strategies; ii) organisational-level, which comprise of top management support and rewarding system. The contributions of the study are twofold: i) individuals: it helps users to stay alert and aware of what they are doing, willing to explore available features, improves productivity and work performance, and boost job satisfaction; and ii) organisations: it helps organisation to make plans and strategies in improving staff performance. Mindfulness is useful to be applied in confronting with habitual behaviour or routinisation of work.
