dc.descriptionInternet use has increased significantly due to the globally increasing use of computers. This prevalence has contributed as well to the increasing use of the World Wide Web, which considers as one of the computer technology inventions that changed the modes of human communication and information exchange. As new work tools, online systems are being used by a growing number of people. Thus, user authentication has become an important online environment issue. The traditional password is still the most common means to prove user identity when using online systems. However, strong passwords are sometimes difficult to remember, and thus some form of recovery is required. Almost, all online systems use several options for recovery methods, such as using challenge questions and out-of-band communication (i.e., email or SMS). Nevertheless, these approaches still suffering from security and usability problems. Therefore, this study proposes a new authentication method based on User Interface (UI) preferences, called User Interface Preferences Authentication (UIPA). This method could be applied in online systems that offer UI designs. It provides users with the opportunity to select their preferred UI design based on their own characteristics. User identity can then be identified based on the previously selected interface design preferences that may reflect user characteristics. Quantitative research method using experiment and survey techniques has been adopted in this research. Four main stages have been followed in this research, namely, problem identification, exploring the feasibility of possible alternative, proposing a new solution, and evaluation and comparison. Design features and its common values for research selected case study (i.e. online examination) have been investigated. The results showed that nine design features are generally applied in the online exam, namely font (i.e., type, size, colour, and style), background colour, sound alert, questions group, time counters, and a number of questions per page, each one of these features had a number of potential values that could be applied to achieve an effective interface design for online examination. Feasibility evaluation has shown that using UI preferences as evidence on user identity are feasible to use, where users have variations in their preferences (96.8% variation), and each user has stable design preferences within different sessions with an average accuracy rate of 94.5%. After employing UIPA as an account recovery technique performance, security and usability of the proposed method have been evaluated. The experiments results show that UIPA has a false positive rate (FP) = 0.416% and a false negative rate (FN) = 0%.
