dc.description | Soil erosion is a process of detachment and transport of soil particle by water. Information on soil erosion and sediment yield from catchment area is important in achieving sustainable land use and maintaining water quality in rivers and coastal waters. Sedimentation resulting from soil erosion and effect on coastal water productivity. This study was conducted at downstream of Pahang River basin to determine the potential annual soil loss and sediment yield and its influence on the variability of river plume which is induced from sediment in the river. In this study, soil erosion was determined using the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) in GIS software utilizing information on rainfall erosivity (R) using interpolation of rainfall data, soil erodibility (K) using field measurement and soil map, vegetation cover (C) using satellite images, topography (LS) using Digital Elevation Model (DEM) and conservation practices (P ) using satellite images. Sediment yield was determined using the sediment delivery ratio generated from the potential soil loss. Development of plume was determined using images of Aqua MODIS satellite. Images of normalized water-leaving radiance (nLw at 412, 443 and 551 nm) from January 2005 to December 2010 were processed to determine the plume size using the Supervised Maximum Likelihood classification approach and spatial and temporal variability of plume using Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis. The results for the potential of soil loss in the study area was classified as very low (77.56%), low (21.04%), moderate (1.2 %), high (0.33 %), very high (0.04%) and extreme (0.001%). The values of sediment yield (SY) ranged from 0 to 16.28 ton ha-1 yr-1. The variability of the sediment yield in this study area was influenced by the factor of length and steepness of slope, precipitation and land cover. Sediment yield was observed to influence river plume seasonally. High variability of satellite observed plume size was correlated with the amount of precipitation in catchment area. EOF analysis indicated high variability in spatial and temporal of plume distribution. The first mode (61.5% of variance) shows plume was distributed along the shelf and explains the seasonal cycle. Mode 2 (7.8 % of variance) indicated plume propagated to the south during northeast monsoon. Mode 3 (5.7% of variance) explained the distribution of plume to the north during southwest monsoon. Mode 4 at 4.3% of variance explains the propagation of plume to the north and offshore during the inter-monsoon. The high variability of the plume distribution was influenced by the wind direction and magnitude. Understanding the effects of soil erosion in the downstream of Pahang River catchment and its influence on the coastal area productivity contributes to coastal management and planning.,Certification of Master's/Doctoral Thesis" is not available | |
