dc.description | The genus Vatica L. in Peninsular Malaysia comprises 28 species currently recognised. This genus of small to medium trees are distributed in almost all forest types ranging from the swamp forests, coastal forests, limestone forests, lowland dipterocarp forests, hill dipterocarp forests to upper dipterocarp forests. More than 1000 specimens of Vatica were observed from six herbaria in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore. Among the 28 species studied, ten species of Vatica are endemic to Peninsular Malaysia, namely V. cuneata, V. cuspidata, V. flavida, V. heteroptera, V. hullettii, V. lobata, V. pallida, V. scortechinii, V. spatulata and V. yeechongii while V. acrocarpa, V. pedicellata, V. rassak and V. sarawakensis are new records for Peninsular Malaysia and V. cuneata El-Taguri et Latiff and V. spatulata El-Taguri et Latiff are new species to science. Keys to the species of Vatica were constructed, one based mainly on the leaf morphological characters and another one based on fruit calyx characters. New evidences on morphology, anatomy and pollen ultra-structures were also obtained. Morphological studies have added some flower characters especially for V. pallida which were inadequate from the previous studies. Besides that the general shape of the leaves, type of hairs present, secondary and tertiary nervation types and fruit calyx characters for all the species were rectified and updated from previous authors. The fruit calyx morphology was found to be taxonomically significant. The anatomy of the 28 species had shown that there were six types of petiole outlines and vascular bundle, five type of midrib outline and two types of vascular bundle types of the midrib. Results of ultra-structured studies showed that all the specimens had cuticular thickening on the adaxial side of the leaves and six types of trichomes which were simple, two-five armed, stallate, stellate with one arm long, glandular and dendritic were illustrated. The stomata type is staurocytic with 4 to 6 cells. The average size of the stomata ranges from 15-31 μm. The pollen characters of the 24 species had shown that Vatica is stenopalynous, two groups of Vatica have been recognized on the basis of pollen shape, viz, Group I: pollen prolate or subprolate and Group II: Pollen suboblate, oblate or oblate spheroidal, the polar axis (P): 11.67 (20.07) 29.11 μm; the equatorial diameter (E): 11.84 (19.92) 29.99 μm; P/E: 1.06-1.76 in Group I and 0.62-0.98 in Group II. The sculpture pollen is reticulate that include two size of lumina and the width of muri somewhat different in species. The big lumina size: 0.49 (1) 2.42 μm long; the small lumina size: 0.07 (0.16) 0.47 μm; the width of muri: 0.10 (0.47) 1 μm. A total of 116 characters in 28 species were chosen for numerical analysis. The numerical analysis showed two main clusters and five subclusters formed, the former conformed with two sections, namely Sect. Vatica and Sect. Sunaptea. The Gower General Similarity Coefficient values for the Vatica range from moderate to high which implied that the groups have a moderate to close species relationship.,Genus Vatica L. di Semenanjung Malaysia terdiri daripada 28 spesies. Genus yang merangkumi pokok-pokok bersaiz kecil ke sederhana besar ini tersebar di hampir kesemua jenis hutan dari hutan paya, hutan persisir pantai, hutan batu kapur, hutan dipterokarpa tanah rendah, hutan dipterokarpa bukit hingga ke hutan dipterokarpa atas. Lebih daripada 1000 spesimen Vatica daripada enam herbarium di Semenanjung Malaysia dan Singapura telah diteliti. Di kalangan 28 spesies Vatica yang dikaji, sepuluh spesies adalah endemik di Semenanjung Malaysia iaitu V. cuneata, V. cuspidata, V. flavida, V. heteroptera, V. hullettii, V. lobata, V. pallida, V. scortechinii, V. spatulata dan V. yeechongii sementara V. acrocarpa, V. pedicellata, V. rassak dan V. sarawakensis merupakan rekod baru bagi Semenanjung Malaysia dan V. cuneata El-Taguri et Latiff dan V. spatulata El-Taguri et Latiff merupakan spesies baru bagi sains. Kekunci kepada spesies Vatica telah dibina, satu berasaskan ciri morfologi daun dan satu lagi kekunci diasaskan atas ciri-ciri kaliks buah. Bukti-bukti baru bagi morfologi, anatomi dan ultrastruktur debunga juga telah didapati. Kajian morfologi telah menambah berapa ciri bunga terutamanya bagi V. pallida yang tidak lengkap dalam kajian-kajian lepas. Selain itu bentuk umum daun, jenis rerambut yang hadir, jenis peruratan sekunder dan tertier dan ciri kaliks buah bagi kesemua spesies daripada pengarang-pengarang lepas telah diperhalusi dan dikemaskini. Morfologi kaliks buah khususnya didapati mempunyai kepentingan taksonomi. Anatomi bagi 28 spesies yang dikaji menunjukkan terdapat enam jenis garis luar petiol dan berkas vaskular, lima jenis garis luar urat tengah dan dua jenis berkas vaskular urat tengah. Hasil kajian ultra-struktur menunjukkan kesemua spesimen mempunyai penebalan kutikel pada sebelah adaksial daun dan enam jenis trikom iaitu ringkas, 2-5 lengan, stelat, stelat dengan satu lengan, berkelenjar dan dendritik. Jenis stomata adalah staurositik dengan 4-6 sel. Saiz purata stomata dari 15-31μm. Ciri-ciri debunga bagi 24 spesies menunjukkan Vatica adalah stenopalinos, dua kumpulan Vatica telah dicamkan berasaskan bentuk debunga viz. Kumpulan 1: debunga prolat atau subprolat dan Kumpulan II: debunga suboblat, oblat atau oblat steroid, paksi kutub (P): 11.67 (20.07) 29.11 μm; diameter khatulistiwa (E): 11.84 (19.92) 29.99 μm; P/E: 1.06- 1.76 dalam Kumpulan 1 dan 0.62-0.98 dalam Kumpulan II. Ukiran debunga adalah retikulat yang meliputi dua saiz lumen dan lebar muri agak berbeza pada spesies. Lumen bersaiz besar: 0.49 (1) 2.42 μm long; lumen bersaiz kecil: 0.07 (0.16) 0.47 μm; lebar muri; 0.10 (0.47) 1 μm. Sejumlah 116 ciri dalam 28 spesies dipilih untuk analisis numerikal. Analisis numerikal menunjukkan dua kelompok utama dan lima sub kelompok dibentuk, yang awalnya berpadanan dengan dua seksi, iaitu Sect. Vatica dan Sect. Sunaptea. Nilai Koefisien Kesamaan Umum Gower bagi Vatica berjulat daripada sederhana ke tinggi yang merumuskan kumpulan ini mempunyai pertalian spesies yang rapat ke sederhana.,PhD | - |
