dc.descriptionA study was conducted to determine community structure, tree species diversity and relationship of soil factor with tree communities, in an upper hill dipterocarp forest at Temengor Forest Reserve, Perak. Twenty four plots of 80 m x 20 m were established in the study area (3.84 ha). All trees with diameter at breast height (DBH) of 5 cm and above, were measured, tagged and identified. Subplots of 80 m x 1 m were also established in each plot for tree saplings survey, where all saplings with diameter <5 cm and >0.5 m height were enumerated. Samples of top soil (0-15 cm) in each plot were collected and soils were analysed for texture, pH, base cations, available nutrients that include Mg, P, K, inorganic nitrogen of ammonium-N (NH4-N) and nitrate-N (NO3-N). A total of 3084 trees (≥5cm DBH) were recorded in all plots, which comprised of 419 species from 204 genera and 65 families. Euphorbiaceae indicated the most speciose family that was represented by 41 species and 16 genera. For tree saplings, a total of 344 individuals were surveyed that composed of 163 species, 101 genera and 42 families. Density wise, the Euphorbiaceae recorded the highest tree density (≥5cm DBH) with 160 trees/ha. Total tree basal area (BA) was 31.10 m2/ha with Euphorbiaceae contributed the largest BA of 4.04 m2/ha. Based on the Importance Value Index (IVi), Euphorbiaceae and Elateriospermum tapos were the most important family with IVi of 12.11% and 3.28%, respectively. The Shannon Diversity Index (H') showed an index value of 5.23 (H'max=6.04), whilst the Shannon Evenness Index gave a value of 0.87, thereby indicating high species diversity of tree communities in the study area. Total trees biomass was estimated at 291.65 t/ha, whereby Moraceae and Elateriospermum tapos (Euphorbiaceae) contributed the highest total biomass at family and species level with biomass estimations of 42.67 t/ha and 19.72 t/ha, respectively. Soil analyses showed various soil textures in the study plots with soil texture mainly of clay texture. In general, the soils of the study site were acidic, whilst available nutrients were in the range of low to high concentrations. Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) showed a high species-environment correlation.
