This study examines the performance of an aerated pilot reed bed system that was designed for a domestic wastewater treatment. The proposed phytotechnology employed two Malaysian native aquatic plants, namely Scirpus grossus and Lepironia articulata, which were planted in four lines, each with three fiberglass tanks. Each tank measured 1m H x 1 m W x 2 m L, in each line. The first line (R1) was planted with Scirpus grossus, the second line (R2) with Lepironia articulata, the third (R3) one was planted with mix of both plants, and the last line (R4) was left unplanted as a control measure. The domestic wastewater collected in a sedimentation tank from 105 households in Bukit Puteri, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia was used for the entire experiment. Water quality (DO, pH, Temperature, BOD5, COD, TSS, NH4 + and PO4 -3) were monitored in all the systems, within four periods of retention time (0, 1, 3 and 5) days. Water samples were obtained from two sampling points in each reed bed box. After 5 days retention time, the characteristics of treated wastewater showed the following average removable percentage: BOD5 (R1=99.5, R2=99.7, R3=99.5 and R4=75.1), COD (R1=96.2, R2=96.9, R3=96.6 and R4=59.0), TSS (R1=98.9, R2=99.0, R3=99.0 and R4=75.0), NH4 + (R1=100, R2=99.8, R3=99.7 and R4=76.9) and PO4 - (R1=99.9, R2=99.2, R3=99.6 and R4=69.1). Based on the Malaysian Environmental Quality (Sewage) Regulations 2009, the proposed reed bed system has met with the Standard A quality after 3 days of retention time. The stability of reed bed system was investigated using two different heights of wastewater (35cm and 45cm) in the reed-bed tank. The characteristics of the wastewater after been treated in the reed bed of both heights indicated that both are at Standard A after 3 days retention time. However, wastewater at height 35cm indicated a better water quality in comparison to the 45cm height. Nine entophytic bacteria isolated from the external and internal tissue of Lepironia articulata and Scirpus grossus root system showed to belong to four genera Bacillus, Enterobacter, Aeromonas and Chromobacterium. Four bacteria among all isolates showed a high NH4 + and PO4 - biodegradation capability at 50 and 40% respectively. The bacteria showed potential COD biodegradebility to more than 80%. Thus, the pilot reed bed system with the native aquatic plants, Lepironia articulata, and Scirpus grossus demonstrated a very promising pollutant removal efficacy in the treatment of domestic wastewater.,PhD
