Description: Washback effect has become the nexus of language education because it reflects the nature of the interrelationship between language teaching and language testing at both micro and macro levels. This study explores the washback effect of the General Secondary English Examination (GSEE), which is a high-stakes exit test, on Yemeni English teachers and learners at the micro level. Specifically, this study addresses two main issues, the first is the impact of the GSEE on Yemeni English teachers in terms of teaching methods, content assessment, attitudes and motivation and the second is learners' learning activities, learning styles, attitudes and motivation. The study relies on the theoretical insights put forth by Alderson and Wall and Nguyen et al. Mixed mode methods were adopted and data gathering instruments included classroom observations, interviews and surveys. Data collection and data analysis were carried out concurrently for a period of eight months. NVivo10 was used to analyse the qualitative data, while SPSS V20 utilized for analysing the quantitative data. The results of the study revealed that the exam had a great impact mainly on the teachers' teaching methods and syllabus content and on the students' attitudes and motivation. Triangulating the qualitative findings with quantitative results confirmed the same implications. The study provides a clear evidence of the intensity of the exam washback on the components of the language teaching and learning processes and its influence on what and how teachers teach and what and how learners learn. The empirical results of the study would provide new insights into future assessment reforms and serve as baseline for future washback researchers and provide an invaluable resource for Yemeni teachers.,Ph.D.
