dc.descriptionThe main purpose of this study is to undertake an in-depth investigation on the use of interactional reading strategies in reading online by a group of seven Iranian postgraduates who are with internal locus of control. This study used constructivism and new literacy theories to examine the types of interactional reading strategies used to read online texts. The students were selected at the early stage of this study through two types of questionnaires: Locus of control Questionnaire, and Interactional Online Reading Strategies (IORS). 39 Iranian postgraduates who were studying at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia were chosen using convenience sampling to answer the questionnaires. From the results of the questionnaires, only seven students were identified as having internal locus of control. The students were given online text to read and they perform reading through using online forum and other online reading activities to understand the reading text. Data for this study were collected through observations, interviews and online forum. Results showed that the most frequent strategy identified was Planning strategies. Students with an internal locus of control tend to share their own skill, ability and efforts with other readers who are less professional in online reading strategies. Students with an internal locus of control are more likely to do well in independent reading situations. The results also indicated that internal locus of control has an impact on interactional reading strategies. It indicates, the interactional reading strategies used by the learners are closely related to their reading interests and their control on their performance while reading online. There were clear relations among types of interactional reading strategies used and internal locus of control characteristics. Students identified as more independent readers tended to exhibit higher thinking skills and a wider variety of interactional reading strategies. The implication of this study is that students with internal locus of control are more capable of implementing interactional strategies in understanding online reading texts.,Ph.D.
