Description: Master teachers are the crème de la crème of the Indonesian teaching profession. Their main role is to facilitate the government in effectively attending to the needs of the global workforce that demand for young and skilled human capital, with competence in English communication skills. In the process, master teachers are thus expected to demonstrate effective interactional and pedagogical characteristics. This study is an attempt to provide an in-depth understanding of interactional and pedagogical characteristics of Indonesian vocational English master teachers. Using a qualitative research design, this case study was carried out in three vocational schools in Lampung province, Indonesia. The data were collected through observations, videorecordings, interviews, and the perusal of documents. To achieve the objectives, a matrix of interactional characteristics was developed from Xuerong, Walsh, and Moskowitz, while a matrix of pedagogical characteristics was built from Richards, Undang-undang guru dan dosen (Teacher and Lecturer Law) No. 14 2005, and Brown. Four master teachers were selected as participants through a snowball sampling method. Observations were carried out for a total of 29 sessions, 56.25 teaching hours and documents comprising lesson plans and teaching materials were collected and perused. The study revealed, in terms of interactional characteristics, the master teachers shared a number of common interaction management (code, emotional, and managing), elicitation techniques (question planning and uestioncontrolling), feedback (positive feedback), and repair strategies. The characteristics gave equal opportunity for the students to participate in verbal interaction in the classroom and create conducive learning atmosphere. In terms of pedagogical characteristics, the master teachers also had many similarities in their lesson planning, teaching (teaching technique, linguistic focus, teaching source, and teaching aid/device) and classroom management (cooperation and teamwork management, classroom organization, and classroom discipline) strategies. The characteristics enabled the students to communicate using English through various individual and group activities. The students were very receptive to the characteristics as they were keen to actively contribute and participate when they were given questions and opportunities to speak. The emergent themes in this study have led to the development of models of interaction and pedagogy of Indonesian vocational English language master teachers (Models of I-IVEMTs and P-IVEMTs). The models can be used as a guide by stakeholders, especially pre-service teachers, in-service teachers, teacher trainers, and policy makers for improved curriculum design in the teaching and learning of English language in vocational schools in Indonesia.,Ph.D.
