This study seeks to investigate the Jordanian undergraduate students' most preferred use of cognitive and meta-cognitive reading strategies when engaging in a mobile reading environment. In addition it explores the effect of the reading exercises on their comprehension level. This mixed-method study employed both quantitative and qualitative data collection procedures. A total of 109 students from the World Islamic Science and Education University, Jordan, were purposely selected to participate in the study. The research instruments included a two set of survey questionnaires, interview protocols, and two reading tests. Data from the questionnaires and the reading test were analyzed using SPSS tools while thematic analysis was used to analyse the interview data. The statistical analysis of the data found that the most preferred reading strategies among the students when they engaged in reading using the mobile applications were Planning Strategies (Metacognitive) (2.034 (± 0.312) and Attending Strategies (Cognitive) 2.034 (± 0.225, followed by Evaluating Strategies (Metacognitive) 2.06 (± 0.312). The findings also showed that there was a high correlation score, r = 0.918 (p<0.05) between their reading exercises and reading test scores. This indicates that the more frequent they engage in the reading exercises, the higher they score in their test. Additional findings from an in-depth interview showed strong inclination toward reading activities via smartphones among the students at this university. They reported that it was easier for them to practice reading and to read class materials at their finger tips anytime and anyplace at their own convenience. The implication of the study shows that reading skills in mobile environment should be trained by using several reading strategies, specifically the cognitive and metacognitive reading strategies which can be embedded within the reading packages designed for specific language learners. .,Ph.D.-
