A patent abstract is a short section of a patent which introduces and summarizes an invention. Its purpose is to convince readers that the patent is novel, useful and informative. As a persuasive form of writing, a patent abstract follows a particular structure that employs specific rhetorical features to achieve the persuasive purpose. Due to the lack of mastery of such structure and features, Arabic patent drafters often face difficulties in writing the abstracts. Consequently, a high number of patent abstracts are rejected in the application process. Adopting the genre analysis approach and Hyland's metadiscourse theory, this study investigates the rhetorical structure and the interactional metadiscourse markers (IMDMs) of accepted Arabic patent abstracts in the field of Human necessity. The first objective of the study is to identify the rhetorical structure of Arabic patent abstracts based on Swales' model of structural move analysis. Secondly, this study investigates the associated IMDMs that help realize the structural moves to produce persuasive abstracts following Hyland's model of metadiscourse. Thirdly, this study examines the distribution of IMDMs in relation to the structural moves to identify the relationship between the appearance of each IMDM and the communicative function of the structural move. In this study, a corpus of 72 Arabic patent abstracts derived from the Gulf Cooperation Council Patent Office official website is compiled. The findings show that Arabic patent abstracts have seven component moves, six of which are obligatory while one is optional. Based on the analysis, a proposed rhetorical move framework is developed in order to present a uniform and standardised Arabic framework. The findings show that boosters and hedges dominate the IMDMs categories analyzed and that some IMDMs show a tendency to appear more than others. The findings also show that there is a direct connection between the presence of IMDMs and the communicative function of each move. Based on the findings, the study provides a set of guidelines which offers valuable insights not only for patent abstract drafters and researchers but more importantly the various stakeholders in the industry. The study has the potential to improve the drafting skills of Arabic patent drafters, hence increasing the rate of successful patent applications.,Ph.D-
