Description: | The objective of the study is to examine the efficacy of the treatment of systematic desensitization on mathematics anxiety in relation to self-efficacy and performance in year one college students. This study employs a quasi-experimental research design. The sample consists of 65 year one students of which 32 are assigned to the experimental group and another 33 are assigned under control group. The instruments used in collecting data are The Adopt and Adapt Fennama-Sherman Mathematics Attitude Scale (MAS), Neo-Five-Factory Personality Inventory (NEO-FFI), Generalized Self-Efficacy (GSE), Mathematics Performance Test (MPT), and The Systematic Desensitization (SD) Module. The instruments were administrated at pretest, posttest, and two-month follow-up test. Quantitative data are analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics (Pearson Product-Moment correlation, ANCOVA, ANOVA, Tukey (HSD), and SPANOVA). The findings from Pearson Product-Moment correlation indicate that self-efficacy is significantly found to be positively correlated with performance and negatively related to mathematics anxiety. The finding from ANCOVA shows that systematic desensitization treatment significantly produces the main effect on students' mathematics anxieties. The finding from ANOVA also reports a reduction in the level of mathematics anxiety, an increase of the level of self-efficacy and performance in students. However, the finding from Tukey (HSD) reports no significant difference in mathematics anxiety levels between the groups. The finding from SPANOVA also shows that the systematic desensitization treatment cannot maintain its effect on mathematics anxiety, self-efficacy, and performance at the pretest to the two-month follow-up test. Based on the research findings, the systematic desensitization treatment proves to have a significant desired efficacy on students' mathematics anxieties, self-efficacy, and performance. Therefore, it can be considered as an effective treatment to lessen mathematics anxiety and improve self-efficacy and performance in students. Hence, the findings of the study enable to provide new perspective to a group of practitioners and other researchers.,Ph.D |
