Description: This study focuses on the revert narratives, the Echoes Series, by Jamilah Kolocotronis, a Caucasian American Muslim revert writer. The Echoes Series comprises five novels: Echoes, Rebounding, Turbulence, Ripples and Silence. In these revert narratives, the revert – after embracing Islam – struggles to balance between what is right by Islam and what is acceptable by her/his family and society after 9/11, given the American culture in which she/he grew up in. The objectives of this study are to examine how the revert's path from an American individual perspective to one that incorporates Islamic sensibilities is shown by Kolocotronis, to identify the formations of the American consciousness post-9/11 in the Echoes Series, and to examine the conceptions of the Muslim consciousness post-9/11 in the Echoes Series. An eclectic conceptual framework developed in this study, drawn from American, counter-terrorism and Islamic studies, is premised on seven constructs. The American Dream, individuality and post-9/11 vulnerability are constructs of the American consciousness. Meanwhile, the Pillars of Faith and Islam, muraqaba versus ghaflah, al-jihad al-akbar, taataf, the Muslim family and the American Muslim self are constructs of the Muslim consciousness. By looking at the Echoes Series as a case study which explicates the revert's activities and relations, conflicts and resolutions, his/her path from an independent lifestyle to more of Islamic sensibilities become clear. The findings show that the revert's path, as shown by Kolocotronis, captures the cultural and religious complexities of assimilating into the American culture and acculturating Islamic beliefs. The American consciousness post-9/11 in the Echoes Series is evident in tensions between some family members and the prevalence of racial profiling, which provides basis to suspect Muslims as terrorists. The Muslim consciousness post-9/11 in the Echoes Series reveals that the Muslim family persists when the husband provides qiwāma, the wife shares compassion with her husband or vice versa, the parents give raiaya and ershad to their children, and the children offer birr al-walidayn. The implication of this study is that the American Muslim consciousness framework developed in this study can be replicated to understand other revert narratives in the post-9/11 American milieu.,Ph.D
