| dc.description | This study focuses on Malay-English code-switching in online discussion forums by students in an e-distance learning program at Universiti Teknologi MARA Shah Alam. The main objectives of this study were to investigate the patterns of language choice and to identify the discourse function of code-switching. The study also aimed to examine the unconventional spellings or neography used when posting messages. A qualitative research method of computer-mediated discourse analysis approach (CMDA) was employed. A total of 1020 archived posting messages sent by the students from various faculties were collected. Survey questions were sent to the participants to triangulate the reasons for code-switching and the use of neography among participants. Findings showed that insertion and alternation code-switching between English and Malay were employed in their messages depending on the code or the first word used in the posting. The concept of insertion code-switching was employed more frequent when messages were written initially in English while alternation code-switching was more frequent when messages were written in Arabic. In addition, the use of greeting such as 'Salam', Assalamualaikum', and 'Assalam' in Malay society can no longer be considered as lexical borrowing or code-switching from Arabic language. Code-switching was treated as a discourse-related as it highlighted the pragmatic functions and contributed to better communicative strategy. Finally, findings indicated that neography coexist with conventional orthography especially abbreviation, vowel reduction, homophone and written-out-laughter to convey their messages. Neography helps to enhance their message and used as language play thus make the communication online more effective. The study is a welcome contribution to the field of sociolinguistics that involves online discussion forum amongst Malaysian students and lecturers in a e-distance learning programme. The researchon code-switching as reflected in the use of online forums as a communicative tool is indeed important in order to avoid any misunderstanding during the teaching process.
