Description: This case study investigated the impact of online dialogue journal writing (ODJW) on low proficiency ESL students' writing anxiety and writing performance in a Malaysian public university. ODJW was introduced as a supplementary writing project and conducted outside students' English class time. The undergraduates wrote dialogue journal entries to the researcher and a partner based on 17 topics provided in the university's e-learning portal of the English course the students were enrolled in.This study was framed using Vygotsky's theory of Constructivism, Krashen's Affective Filter Hypothesis and Bandura's Social-Cognitive Theory. The social constructivists' view and the elements of Social-Cognitive Theory offer an alternative to the traditional teacher-centered approach by focusing on individual learners in authentic language learning contexts. A total of 26 first-year undergraduates were involved in this case study for 12 weeks. The quantitative research instruments consisted of an adapted Second Language Writing Anxiety Inventory (SLWAI) and a pre-and-post writing test. The former measured students' writing anxiety levels and also types of writing anxiety. The latter was employed to determine students' writing levels before and after the treatment. Qualitative data collection involved one-to-one interviews with 23 respondents. Descriptive and inferential statistics were obtained from the quantitative data via SPSS version 22.0. The interviews were transcribed and analysed in detail into themes. The findings show that the respondents' writing anxiety levels were significantly reduced. It also indicates that there is a significant decrease in students' cognitive anxiety levels, somatic anxiety levels and avoidance behaviour patterns at the end of the study. Students' also displayed a marked improvement in their attitude towards writing as they have benefited greatly from participating in the ODJW project. Therefore, it is possible to conclude that the ODJW be utilised as a tool to alleviate students' writing anxiety levels, improve writing performance and promote the development of coping strategies that will further enhance low proficiency ESL students' writing experience.,Ph.D.
