Description: | There have been significant changes to India's and Pakistan's military doctrines over the last two decades. India has lowered its conventional military threshold from a full-fledged conventional war to a limited war through the introduction of the 'Cold Start Doctrine'. India assumes that this strategy will not prompt a nuclear reaction from Pakistan. In response, Pakistan has lowered its nuclear threshold to deal with the Indian threat by introducing tactical nuclear weapons. Pakistan perceives that India will be deterred to engage in any possible military aggression against Pakistan's interest. Nonetheless, such perception has been increasingly difficult to defend. Despite the deterrence feature of nuclear weapons, India and Pakistan have been involved in six military crises in last three decades, some of which, with severe repercussions. Therefore, this thesis inspects the dynamics of Pakistan's nuclear weapons in securing Pakistan, in the larger framework of India-Pakistan regional dispute and power balance. The primary question addressed in this research is: Has nuclear deterrence succeeded in providing security to Pakistan? To address this question, the study embarks in the following objectives. First, it investigates the role of nuclear deterrence in providing security to Pakistan against Indian conventional military threat. Second, it examines the dynamics of nuclear deterrence in averting full-fledged conventional war between India and Pakistan. Third, it analyzes the role of Pakistan's tactical nuclear weapons in averting limited conventional war between India and Pakistan. Fourth, it examines the role of US diplomacy in averting conventional war between India and Pakistan. This research employs qualitative methodology with extensive primary data. It adopts the Deterrence Theory as its analytical framework. There are five primary findings in this research. Firstly, although the space for conventional war existed between India and Pakistan, nuclear deterrence was able to deter Indian conventional military threat and provide durable security to Pakistan. Secondly, after their nuclearization, no conventional war had been experienced between the two states. Third, nuclearization of South Asia lured the United States to play a pivotal role in managing the crises. Fourth, Pakistan's tactical nuclear weapons strategy has managed to block India's Cold Start Doctrine. Fifth, being restricted to initiate conventional war due to Pakistan's nuclear threat, India may opt for air strikes against Pakistan in future crises.,'Certification of Master's / Doctoral Thesis' is not available,Ph.D.,'Certification of Masters/Doctoral Thesis' is not available |
