dc.description | In Libya, groundwater is the main water source of irrigation due to extremely low rainfall distribution. Excessive groundwater mining, rapid population growth and agricultural intensification have adversely affect the groundwater quality and quantity, especially in Sugh El-Chmis area. The major aim of this study was to examine the groundwater quality and its suitability for agricultural use in the Sugh El-Chmis. Moreover, this research also aims to find out the relationship between the perception of groundwater quality and agricultural activities on crop suitability. The outline of research methodology is based on mixed approach, initiated through explanatory sequential design. The water quality and agricultural use is examined in the experimental framework, study related to farmer's perception and crop suitability is done through an explorative research, while the irrigation issues is being assesed through the evaluative approach. The study also used GIS to produce maps of the geographical distribution of groundwater quality by Inverse Distance Weightage (IDW) method. The water quality result shows an extreme value of Total Dissolved Solid (TDS> 3,200 mg/l), especially in the northern area. Even though the sodium content in water (SAR) is acceptable for irrigation purposes, however soluble sodium percentage in the water (SSP) and its Kelly's ratio (KR) indicates adverse effect to soil and plant. The farmer's perception study shows significant different in agricultural activities between the northern and southern of Sugh El-Chmis [(F=9.40), (Sig. < 0.05, p = 0.002)]. Crop suitability analysis shows salt-resistant crops such as wheat, olive, palm and alfalfa is suitable in the northern area, whereas fruit like apricot, grape and lemon is much suitable in southern area. This study reveals the importance of awareness programme among farmers, as well as to reevaluate the existing water policy in order to managing water in sustainable manner.,'Certification of Master's/Doctoral Thesis' is not available,Ph.D. | - |
