dc.description | In Jordan, the official status of English language is as an instrument for promoting the country's education, technology, economy, and its international cultural relations in sectors such as aviation, tourism, foreign affairs, and higher scientific studies. However, the chief constraint in translating this status of English into reality is said to be the teaching and learning of English in the education system, in particular, the lack of attention to developing oral skills in school. As a result, a noticeable increased level of anxiety has been observed among university students, particularly, freshmen, when they are required to communicate in English. This Foreign Language Speaking Anxiety (FLSA) has been studied in many Western and Asian countries and certainly the problem among Jordanian undergraduates warrants investigation too. This study investigates FLSA among Jordanian undergraduates to discover the underlying factors and their sources related to speaking anxiety. To do so, the FLSA Scale (FLSAS) questionnaire was administered to 112 freshmen, including 58 males and 54 females at Jadara University, followed by one-to-one in-depth semi-structured interviews with 20 participants. The quantitative data was analysed using the exploratory factor analysis (EFA) in SPSS to reveal the underlying structure and identify the relationship between the items of FLSAS, while the qualitative data was coded using the NVivo software to facilitate analysis. Four factors were identified as being responsible for the elevated level of FLSA and twelve sources cause them. All were similar to the findings of previous empirical studies except four new sources: fear of being perceived as showing-off, cultural barrier between male and female students, fear of impromptu questions and previous school. The first two of these factors highlight the importance of considering the cultural backgrounds of learners when teaching English in an Arabic and /or Muslim context like Jordan. The other two factors reveal the inadequacy of EFL teaching in schools, and universities too. The results support the theory that cultural differences are significant in addressing the issue of FLSA. In conclusion, some techniques and instructions are proposed to lessen the negative effects of FLSA.
