dc.description | Metaphor poses an interpretive problem for Iraqi EFL learners and causes them to misunderstand most of the English contexts. This issue hinders their FL acquisition and results in unqualified FL learners. It is argued that there are many factors that affect Iraqi EFL learners' FL metaphor comprehension. Such factors are age, observational learning, frequency of exposure, the effect of L1 metaphorical skills on FL, L1 metaphorical skills, attitude (cognitive, and affective attitudes), and intention to learn FL. The study aims to test the effects of these factors on the Iraqi EFL learners' FL metaphor comprehension, as well as, to test those learners' performance across different FL conceptual domains of metaphor. The participants were 436 Iraqi EFL learners who lived in Baghdad. They were classified into two age stages, primary school learners (7-11 years old), and secondary school learners (14-17 years old). The data collection was based on a self-administered questionnaire survey. The questionnaire was divided into several parts: the demographic part, questions about the learners' language exposure, questions on 30 metaphoric proverbs in Arabic and 30 metaphoric proverbs in English. All proverbs were followed by a set of four distractors and the task of the respondents was to identify the right interpretation among the four distractors. The study concluded that, EFL learners should be exposed as much as possible to authentic English contexts, taking in consideration their age stages concerning the tasks that they are expected to perform. Their affective attitude needs to be supported since it also has an effect on FL metaphorical performance.,Certification on Master's/Doctoral Thesis" is not available | - |
