These plays were chosen for their respective focus on selected historical settings in which events from Malaysia's past, namely Operation Lalang, the assassination of British Resident J.W.W Birch and episodes from the Sejarah Melayu were reconstructed and revisioned. The objective of the study is to reveal how within these layers of historical reconstruction, opinionated voices and reformed identities have emerged to resist hegemonic power and authoritative discourse. The framework for analysis utilises concepts in New Historicism, namely ideological operations, power network and re-visioning strategies, as well as Heteroglossia and Carnival from Mikhail Bakhtin's Dialogism. The methodology of analysis seeks to expose the operations of ideology within the discourse of historical re-visioning and resisting voices. Findings reveal the ideological and power operations that expose the adoption of re-visioning strategies - elevation and denigration of identity as well as empowerment through voice and agency - to combat dominant discourse. By examining dialogical aspects, the ideological and resistant voices are exposed. Two types of power operation are disclosed, hegemonic power as well as subversion and resistance. In the resistance of authoritative discourse, power is found to be vulnerable and limited. The investigation of two distinct forces, namely centripetal and centrifugal, unveils two distinct discourses in the plays: authoritative and internally persuasive. In addition, mockery against hegemonic power through comical portrayals of the rulers, which trigger ambivalent laughter, is used to resist authoritative discourses. The implications of this study show how the past could be described afresh with a view to the perceived needs of the present. The reconstruction of history, in dramatic form provides a unique perspective to the various ways in which hegemony, political power, ideological control and resistance are manifested in historical events. Such a perspective also provides insights into how authoritative discourse can be resisted through both deliberate and subtle means.,Certification on Master's/Doctoral Thesis" is not available |
