dc.descriptionFood writing is a novel subject in the Malaysian Institution of Higher Education. Subsequently, research on the specialized vocabulary used within food writing is scarce and very little is known about the teaching and learning of specialized vocabulary in food writing. Therefore, this study aims to discover (1) what are specialized vocabulary in food writing, (2) the process students take to acquire the specialized vocabulary and problems they encounter during the acquisition process, (3) how the specialized vocabulary were introduced during lectures, and (4) if students were able to apply the specialized vocabulary in their written assignments. This qualitative study was divided into two parts; the first is the corpus analysis using the Range & Frequency computer program to come up with the list of specialized vocabulary used within the food writing course, the second part was the case study conducted in UiTM Shah Alam, consisting of semi-structured interviews, classroom observation and artifacts. The informants for this study include 3 ESL students undergoing the food writing course and 1 lecturer teaching the food writing course. The artifacts compiled consisted of students' written assignments. The findings from the corpus analysis show a compilation of 354 specialized vocabulary, which were further broken down to categories; mainly ingredients, food/drink, tools/utensils, methods, description and other words related to culinary arts and journalism. The major finding from the case study demonstrate that students acquired specialized vocabulary through internal (anatomy (motivation) and individual strategies) and external (class/lectures, social network and technology) influence.
