dc.descriptionStudents at tertiary level in Thailand encounter intercultural communication problems due to a lack or overuse of cultural politeness which has led to miscommunication with expatriate lecturers who are teaching them English courses. Previous studies have emphasized on mixing texts or hybridity by Thai students to form a new genre in the discourse of offline texts. However, very little is known about the hybridity of Thai-Western politeness in online communication. The objectives of this study are to investigate how the Thai students mediate hybrid Thai-Western politeness in the online forum which has become a medium of communication in EFL classroom. In order to examine the hybridity of Thai-Western politeness, three theoretical frameworks were applied. Brown and Levinson's (1987) politeness strategy theory was used to identify categories of politeness. Cultural construct theory by Hofstede's (1980) theory was utilized to describe features of Thai-Western politeness. To uncover how the students mediate hybrid Thai-Western politeness, Kim's (2001) intercultural transformation theory was employed. Qualitative data was collected from 146 online entries of undergraduate students enrolled in English and American Cultural Background course at a public university in southern Thailand during a semester. To support the data, an audio recording of focus-group interviews with the student participants and their lecturer and four classroom observations were carried out. Findings showed that Positive politeness was the most preferred strategy used by the participants when sharing opinions with their lecturer. The Thai respect phenomenon highly occurred in all categories of politeness strategies used by the participants. In addition, cultural dimensions of individualism and collectivism were significant among the participants and it is evident that Thai students are beginning to integrate Thai-Western politeness in their interactions during the online forums with their lecturer.
