| dc.description | This doctoral thesis aims at examining four categories of mystical metaphors in spiritual poems written by the Iranian poet Sohrab Sepehri, and how these mystical metaphors are conceptualized based upon conventional generic-level metaphors. The study is focused on cognitive linguistic aspects of mystical metaphors, while at the same time, it highlights Sepehri's complicated and intertwined mystical ideas belonging to four categorizations of Sufi notions that are God, spiritual progress, love and death. The study employs the framework of Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) to analyse the mystical metaphors and the mappings across their domains. The data collection procedure was conducted in three phases. In the first phase, the mystical ideas about the four selected mystical concepts were identified based upon mystical resources and encyclopedias of Persian mysticism. In the second phase, the four mystical metaphors were extracted from three volumes of Sepehri's poetry. In the last phase, the extracted mystical metaphors were analysed descriptively using the CMT framework. The findings showed that in spite of the complexity of relations between mystical metaphors, Sepehri has utilized the generic-level metaphors to express his mystical ideas. Thus, the generic-level metaphors of the mystical expressions can explain the complex linguistic and semantic relations established among the mystical metaphors of God, spiritual journey, love and death. The results of this study indicate that the generic-level metaphors in Sepehri's poetry are not just some frames to express a mystical idea; they influence the quality of the mystical idea. In fact, Sepehri employs novel metaphorical images, elaborates remarkable relations in the domains of mystical metaphors, and composes various domains to transfer his own mystical messages. This implies that, the framework of cognitive linguistics is applicable to mystical texts, and the results of utilizing the cognitive approach provide an accurate description of mystical metaphors in the selected texts.,Certification of Master's/Doctoral Thesis" is not available | - |
