Description: This action research investigates critical reading strategies among EFL students in the Iranian classroom. The study focuses on the deployment of critical reading strategies to engage Iranian EFL students in critical reading, to improve their ability to read with purpose and to foster their engagement in higher level of thinking (analysis, synthesis, and evaluation) as expounded in the cognitive domain of Bloom's taxonomy. This research aims to identify critical reading strategies as employed by Iranian EFL students; to investigate their reactions and responses to the processes of teaching critical reading strategies, and to conceptualize a theoretical framework for the teaching of critical reading strategies. This study employs Stringer's Action Research Model which allows the repetition process of inquiry, i.e. Look, Think, and Act to take place. Both quantitative and qualitative approaches and methods, such as observation checklists, semi-structured interviews, and teacher's journal are employed in the data collection process. The findings suggest that students need to be exposed to reading strategies which would lead them to engage in higher levels of thinking in the cognitive domain. The findings also reveal that utilizing modified critical reading strategies through purpose-built worksheets assist the students to systematically progress from reading passages and texts in literal comprehension to inferential and critical comprehension. It is suggested that critical reading strategies should be developed and implemented in teacher education and reading classroom to improve critical reading strategies and skills in education.,Ph.D.
