This research examines the dynamic of Islamic parties in Indonesia in the era of reformasi until 2004. The establishing phenomena of various political parties, including Islamic ones, immediately after the end of authoritarian Soeharto regime, indicate characteristics of democratic political change. This process of democratization has given impact on the emergence of freedom of speech, gathering, organizing societies as part of rapid expansion of democratic values. Main issues raised in this research are: how does the existence of political parties in the perspective relations between Islam and power politics in Indonesia and how does the dynamics of Islamic political parties are roles and implements under the reformasi agendas in this country. This study has seeks to identify the relationship between Islam and power politics and to explain the existence of political parties in the perspective relations between Islam and power politics in Indonesia. The analysis also seeks to understand the dynamic of Islamic parties in implementing reformasi agendas. This research has used democracy theory as opperational concepts such as sovereignty, power politics and state with its roles. Political party concept is also used as an opperationally tool to explain the development of democracy, democracy institutionalization and party decline. The theoritical discussion then focuses on Islam political thoughts including the paradigm of religious relationships and power politics, Islam political system through a theory of God Sovereignty. Method of the research is a qualitative-descriptive analysis aimed to make a factual description as precise as possible qualitatively on the phenomena concerned. The historical approach was used in this research to identrify the dynamics, development and roles of Islamic political party, especially in reformation era. Primary data obtained from field investigation and interview with figures of Islamic parties while secondary data based on a number of literatures. The significance finding of the reserach is that the religious relations and power politics in Indonesia are manifested into three mainstreams as follows: formalistics, substantivistics and fundamentalist-revivalistics. And these are also a characteristics of main Islamic parties in the era of reformasi. The research also conclude that Islamic parties in reformation era did not have the strong ideology and grass root neither, easy to change due to internal parties conflict and generally more pragmatic-oriented, opportunist and hence might be called opportunist-pragmatic Islamic political parties more procedural rather than substantial oriented.,Ph.D
