Description: | The objective of the present research is to reconsider Harold Pinter's repute as an absurd playwright through an analysis of selected plays. The corpus of the research includes eight of his plays as follows: The Room (1957); The Birthday Party (1957); The Hothouse (1958); One for the Road (1984); Mountain Language (1988); The New World Order (1991); Party Time (1991); Ashes to Ashes (1996). The theoretical framework of the study is interdisciplinary and eclectic in form and draws from Imperialism and Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The research questions methodically focus on historical, cultural and social events that contribute to Pinter's mark as an absurd playwright. However, through the lens of the theoretical frame work, it is shown that Pinter has embedded strong aversion toward imperialism and advocates for human rights even in his early plays which debunks his fame as an absurdist. Through scrutinizing his plays in reverse order, where his latest works show overt sympathy for human rights and loathing for imperialistic ambitions, this study demonstrates that the compassion for individual rights and anti-imperialism have always been entrenched in his oeuvre. The major implication of this research is to negate Pinter's equation solely as an absurd playwright but to offer a richer evaluation of his significance as a writer who revives human dignity, abhors hegemonic policies, and rejects the brutalities of imperialism.,Tujuan kajian ini ialah untuk menilai semula reputasi Harold Pinter sebagai seorang penulis drama absurd melalui analisis beberapa drama terpilih. Korpus kajian merangkumi lapan drama ciptaan beliau: The Room (1957); The Birthday Party (1957); The Hothouse (1958); One for the Road (1984); Mountain Language (1988); The New World Order (1991); Party Time (1991); Ashes to Ashes (1996). Rangka bentuk teoritikal kajian ini bersifat antara displin dan beragam terilham dari Imperialisme dan Pengisytiharan Semesta Hak Asasi Manusia. Soalan-soalan kajian secara metodologi ditumpukan ke atas peristiwa-peristiwa bersejarah, kebudayaan dan sosial yang menyumbang kepada pencapaian Pinter sebagai seorang penulis drama absurd. Meskipun begitu, melalui kaca mata rangka bentuk teoritikal ini, terlihat Pinter telah menanamkan sifat kebencian terhadap imperialisme dan sokongan kepada hak asasi manusia dalam beberapa drama terawal beliau yang tidak pun mencerminkan dirinya sebagai karyawan absurd. Dengan meneliti drama-drama beliau secara terbalik dalam penghasilan mereka, yang mana bermula dengan karyakarya lewat beliau yang sarat dengan simpati secara tersurat kepada hak asasi manusia dan kebencian kepada impian imperial, kajian ini membuktikan bahawasanya keprihatinan terhadap hak individu dan anti-imperialisme telah lama bersemadi dalam karya-karyanya. Kesan besar dari kajian ini ialah menyanggah mengenali Pinter sebagai penulis drama absurd semata-mata tetapi juga untuk menawarkan penilaian yang lebih terperinci hakikat diri beliau sebagai seorang penulis umum yang menghidupkan semula maruah manusia, membenci dasar hegemoni dan menolak kezaliman imperialisme.,Ph.D |
