| dc.description | This study examines the contextualization of the ‘Islamic Language’ (henceforth IL) within the elements of events and characters of the Cities of Salt Trilogy. IL is informed by the al-Qur’an and Hadith and is, therefore, sometimes referred to as a language of belief, reflecting the Islamic ‘tassawur’ or worldview which constitutes its basic use. IL includes words, expressions and statements that are almost exclusively used by Muslims such as verses from the al-Qur’an, expressions such as "god willing", as well as words such as ‘masjid’ and ‘hajj’. These novels were written in the 1980s by the Arab novelist, Abdulrahman Munif, and translated into English by the American critic, Peter Theroux around the 1990s. The conceptual framework draws upon the concepts of ‘basic’, ‘context’, ‘relational’ and ‘field’, advanced by Izutsu and al-Attas to highlight IL and its usage in the novels. The concepts suggest that Islamic words and expressions gain ‘relational‘ uses in addition to their 'basic‘ ones due to the influence of a new ‘context‘ that produces new semantic ‘fields‘. Appropriate contexts are thus important as locations of IL. The methodology of the study focuses on the narrative elements of events and characters in the Cities of Salt Trilogy as new contexts of IL. Findings reveal inappropriate contextualization of IL, resulting in clear conflicts between IL basic use and the relational uses occasioned by the new fictive contexts. With regard to events, the study exposes 45 event fields that transgress or challenge Islamic injunctions and precepts, thereby becoming contexts that clearly demean, belittle or make a travesty of IL. Likewise, the character fields generated by doctor Subhi, Sultan Khureybit and Ibn Naffeh, main characters crucial to the story who are at the same time invested with negative characterizations, become contexts that are clearly inappropriate for IL, a point compounded by the absence of positive characters as “balancers” to these negative ones. In conclusion, the study clearly shows that Munif furnishes his Cities of Salt Trilogy with fictive contexts that are inimical to IL, which, as a language of belief, is informed by the Islamic worldview that constitutes its basic use.,Kajian ini mengkaji pengkontekstualan atau penempatan 'Bahasa Islamik’ (seterusnya BI) dalam konteks peristiwa dan watak dari trilogi Cities of Salt.
