This thesis focuses on environmental degradation caused by rural community practices in Ghebeish area. The objectives of the study are to investigate the environmental degradation specially tracing the changes in vegetation cover, the rural community practices in traditional production sector, and how humans in the study area perceive the environmental degradation. To achieve these objectives, questionnaire-interviews were conducted. A total number of (420) respondents randomly selected were asked for their perception on current environmental degradation. Rainfall data for the last four decades and remote sensing image is used for data collection. Chi-square test, regression model, coefficient of variation, correlation coefficient, Eardas Imagine and ArcGIS were used in the data analysis. The study pointed out that most (91.6%) of the respondents were aware of the environmental degradation. They perceived (65.7% the variation in the data set informing of disappearance of some vegetation species and appearance of new ones negatively. In addition to variation and fluctuation of rainfall, (C.V= 0.33) the study also revealed that traditional agricultural production system, local building materials, charcoal making and increase in human and animals' population have been the main causes of environmental degradation These show 85% of the variation in the data set at the r = 0.01. A negative correlation between early land clearing and agricultural production was established (r = -0.42 at the r = 0.01). The study also found that shrubs and cultivated areas increased by 18.2% and 31.8% respectively at the expense of areas covered by grass, Wadis and forests decreased by the rate of -1.47%, -0.081% and-0.037% per year in the last twenty seven years. To mitigate the environmental degradation, the researcher suggests the following: the adoption of the modern cultivation practices instead of the traditional ones, provision of stone, red or mud bricks instead of local building materials as well as using natural gas instead of charcoal. Continuous monitoring of land use through remote sensing and GIS is seen as indispensable methods in visualizing the environmental degradation.,PhD
