This study ascertains the relationship between five factor personality (Extraversion, Agreeableness, Neuroticism, Openness to experience and Conscientiousness), marital satisfaction, the probability of marital infidelity and the risk of divorce as determinants five factor personalities as predictors of the probability of marital infidelity, marital satisfaction and risk of divorce. The main objective of this study is to show how infidelity, marital satisfaction and divorce can be predicted by personality traits. One hundred twenty four males and one hundred eighty three females between ages of 20 to 55 years old who had been married for at least 2 years filled out a 134-question survey and attended the interview session. The collected data were analyzed using AMOS 18.0 and SPSS 18.0. This study found that some variables such as conscientiousness influence females’ marital satisfaction, but not that of males’. Openness to experience influences males’ marital satisfaction, but not that of females. Neuroticism trait influences the probability of marital infidelity of female not for male. In addition, there was a negative relationship between marital satisfaction of the male and the probability of marital infidelity of highly educated males, but not for females. However, other variables such as extraversion, openness, agreeableness, neuroticism and length of marriage were found to influence the marital satisfaction of both sexes. In addition, extraversion and neuroticism were found to influence the probability of marital infidelity in both sexes, also neuroticism and extroversion that can influence the risk of divorce in both. Extraversion has a higher standardized regression weight to determine the marital satisfaction of the mixed sample of this study compared to the other personality traits. As for the effect of personality traits on the probability of marital infidelity, this study found that the standardized regression weight of Extraversion determined that the probability of male marital infidelity is higher than that of females. In addition, this study discovered that several personality traits, such as Neuroticism and Extraversion, correlate with the risk of divorce in highly educated samples. With these findings, this study hopes to increase the literature on personality studies, help family therapist and psychologist to better understand the relation between personality of the couples and the probability of their engagement in infidelity and terminating their marriage, to reduce the number of divorces in Iranian society.,PhD |
