This case study explores the use of a supplementary online writing program known as IQ-Write program among ESL tertiary students in learning academic writing. IQ-Write program was developed based on a Framework for a Supplementary Online Writing Program derived from a Needs Analysis Study conducted on ESL tertiary students from University Teknologi Mara (UiTM) as well as the pertinent learning theories and researches on writing. Specifically, the study aims to investigate (a) the use of the elements of IQ-Write program which are perceived useful by the students in enhancing their writing ability, (b) the ways the program is able to help the students to be critical of their writing process, (c) how it allows the students to be autonomous in learning to write essays and (d) in what way the program affects the students’ attitude towards writing academic essays in English. The subjects in this study comprised 18 Part Three Diploma Students taking an ESL language proficiency course, namely BEL311 (English for Academic Purposes), at UiTM Johor. They were chosen based on a purposive sampling method whereby they were selected from one intact class or the same group. The subjects were treated with IQ-Write program as a supplement in learning to write academic essays for eight weeks in the computer lab. In addition, the students were also allowed to access the program autonomously outside of class time throughout the eight week treatment period. The data were obtained from the research instruments which include weekly observations, interviews, students’ reflective journals and a set of questionnaires and were analyzed qualitatively using triangulation method. The overall findings indicate a positive result in the use of IQ-Write program in enhancing the students’ writing ability. In addition, the subjects also perceived that the program was able to train them to be critical of their writing process and guide them to be autonomous in learning to write academic essays. Furthermore, the outcome of this study also revealed that the students’ participation in this program helped to change their negative attitudes towards learning to write to positive ones which saw an increase in their interest towards academic writing. Hence, the implication of this study shows that IQ-Write program is an invaluable and effective supplementary online writing program for ESL tertiary students learning academic writing.,PhD-
