dc.descriptionThis thesis aimed to compare and contrast the system of verb collocations in English and Persian, predict and evaluate the difficulties caused by the minimal differences in verb collocations and provide the students with the collocational patterns which can help improve their language learning ability. According to the theoretical framework, namely a contrastive lexical approach to verb collocation, it was found that English and Persian verbs are significantly different in their formation, types, and applications. English has more choices in the construction of verbs than Persian does. The simple English verbs outnumber those of Persian. Unlike Persian, English has a broad range of verb types. However, the common English delexical verbs are outnumbered by the Persian verb collocations because the Persian verb lexicon is largely filled with verb collocations of different types. Above all, English uses verb collocations to: paraphrase a verb; change register; elaborate on nouns; switch from the transitive restriction of a simple verb to an intransitive mode; produce certain pragmatic effects by switching from an elongated and wordy structure to corresponding simple verbs in order to exercise formality and conciseness; and indicate semantic and syntactic restrictions, as opposed to Persian, in which the verbs are generally governed by meaning. The use of verb collocations in English seems to be a matter of strategy to give variety to communication, whereas the use of verb collocations in Persian is a matter of necessity. Besides the classification of verbs, the thesis concluded that when Iranian EFL learners receive intervention on verb collocation, and are informed of the grammatical properties of verbs, they can feel at home with English collocations.,PhD
