dc.descriptionThis thesis explores the issue of identity dilemma stemming from a sense of internal and external exile of being caught within a traditional society and its manifestation in the construction of a past-oriented nationalism through focusing on the works of Sadegh Hedayat such as The Blind Owl, The Stray Dog, The Pearl Cannon, Mistress Alaviyeh, Parvin, The Daughter of Sassan and some of his other works. The novel, short stories and plays selected for this study are aligned thematically by the theme of Self-alienation and the construction of self at the cost of demonization the Other. The purpose here is to study how a postcolonial writer, like Sadegh Hedayat, in his works, latently revisions colonial renditions of postcolonial identity and explicate from the perspective of nationalism how much the recuperation of ancient splendor and purity comprised foundational concerns for Sadegh Hedayat. These issues are dealt with vis-à-vis the theoretical framework that revolves around the main theme of post-colonialism. The theoretical framework that has been used is an eclectic approach. It functions successfully at revealing that Orientalism is still prevailing in today’s post-colonial world vis-à-vis native Iranian writer(s). The framework is a combination of five different theorists, Jalal Al-e Ahmad (1984), Edward Said (1978), Frantz Fanon (1967, 1974), Homi Bhabha (1990, 1994), who are considered as classics in the postcolonial world. The other theorist is Benedict Anderson whose ideas on the imagined community are vital in analyzing Hedayat’s nationalism which is based on the Aryanized account of the Iranian history and glorious past, myths, symbols, national memory and the gap between what he defines as the ancestral original identity and an imposed religious one. Through an analysis that juxtaposes the theoretical framework, as well as critical texts against the fiction that Hedayat as a contemporary Iranian writer has written, this study has proven that he has adopted a Western style to regurgitate the Western bias against the Other. This thesis finally shows how Hedayat as one of the founding pioneers of modern Persian literature makes use of the Iranian psyche, culture and religious world to construct a negative view against the natives as the other and shows that Western Orientalism did not end with post-colonialism in a country like Iran, even though it was not colonized in the traditional sense of the word.,Ph.D-
