dc.description | This study investigates three major issues of CSCL in ESL Writing. The first issue is the perception of students towards using Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) in writing projects. The second is analyzing online collaborative strategies employed by the students in completing the projects while the third is analyzing the effectiveness of CSCL in developing ESL Writing. To achieve these objectives, the study used both qualitative and quantitative methods. Data were gathered using interviews, analyses of e-mail entries and analyses of essays. The participants of the study were ten students from the age of 14-17 from a secondary school in Seremban, Malaysia. They were required to collaborate online with ten students from a secondary school in USA in completing their projects. This activity is known as e-pal project. Two independent graders were appointed to assess the essays written by the respondents. The findings of the study revealed that the respondents were very receptive towards the use of CSCL in the ESL writing in completing their projects. They found that this technique of learning was new and an interesting way of getting information that can be used as content for their projects. Secondly, the respondents were found to employ the following strategies in their collaborative activities: editing, revising and fine tuning. As for the effectiveness of CSCL, it was found that there were improvements in the grades attained by the students in their essays which they produced. The study concluded by proposing several suggestions in using CSCL in developing ESL writing in Malaysia.,Ph.D | |
