Description: Most researchers agree that motivation is an essential quality that pervades all aspects of teaching and learning. Motivated students generally show specific qualities or traits such as showing interest in activities, feeling self-efficacious, expanding efforts to succeed, persistence at tasks and using effective cognitive strategies. The main purpose of this study is to examine motivation in terms of the links between motivation, on one hand, and reading of English materials on the other. The present study accepts motivation as an internal as well as the external state or condition that activates, guides and maintains or directs behaviour for a specific task for a specific purpose. In brief, the internal motivation is not only seen in terms of observable or measurable activity but rather what patterns of thinking and beliefs underlie such activity and shape students engagement in the learning process. While external motivation include external factors that influence and encourage students to get involve or participate in these activities. This study intends to examine the notion of motivation and reading of English materials among teacher trainees in three teachertraining institutes in Sabah particularly with the premise that motivation for reading is an important contributor for the amount of reading. The main objective is to examine motivation to read in relation to the four categories and sixteen dimensions of motivation outlined in this study. Apart from that the influence of age, gender, race and English language proficiency level is also investigated. The theoretical framework for this study draws primarily on the model of motivation to read devised by Wigfield and Guthrie (1997). The Motivation for Reading Questionnaire (MRQ) utilised for this study was based on Wigfield and Guthrie's model but modified to suit the needs of this study. Changes were undertaken after taking into consideration the subjects of the present study who are all adult learners. A total of 136 subjects took part in this study. The descriptive findings from the MRQ data revealed that all the teacher trainees had medium and high level of motivation to read English materials. The inferential data indicated no significant difference in overall motivation to read among the teacher trainees except for English language proficiency level. Apart from that a semi-structured interview was also conducted on twenty one participants. The qualitative data supports the quantitative data to a huge extent. However there are some emerging themes in the qualitative data not evident in the quantitative data, such as the significant influences of family, school and friends in inculcating the reading habits among the respondents. Moreover, the respondents indicated their intention to further improve their English language proficiency level by pursuing the TESL course at the three teacher education institutes. In addition, the reading of English materials is primarily mooted by a desire to complete some form of language tasks. Findings of the qualitative data too revealed that age factor, gender and race seemed to be strong determinant factors of motivation to read among the respondents. The study indicates a strong relationship between proficiency level and motivation to read which means that efforts to increase reading habits among ESL teacher trainees should go hand in hand with efforts to increase their proficiency level.,Ph.D.
