Description: Reading is one of the language skills that forms the core of the English language curriculum. Reading is taught to enable students to acquire the necessary reading skills to enable them to enjoy the various types of reading texts and to construct both implicit and explicit meaning from the text. This study examined how reading is taught in a number of selected schools in Melaka. The objectives of the study were to; (i) examine the current practices of teachers teaching reading comprehension, (ii) determine factors influencing the teachers' perceptions and beliefs in relation to their actual teaching practices, and (iii) identify the attributing factors hindering the teachers' actual teaching practices. Participants in the study were 280 randomly selected English language teachers and 413 Form One students from 55 secondary schools in Melaka. Individual in-depth interviews and observations of reading lessons were conducted on a selected sample of six teachers. Data were collected using survey questionnaires, interviews and observations of reading lessons. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics. Thematic analyses were carried out on the qualitative data. Results of the study revealed that teachers taught reading comprehension lessons were mainly based on various stages namely; the pre-reading stage, while reading stage and post reading stage. In addition, reading lessons were integrated with other language skills. Findings from this study showed that various factors influenced the teachers in determining how they teach reading in English language classrooms.,Tesis ini tiada 'Perakuan Tesis Sarjana/Doktor Falsafah',Ph.D
