Description: | Investigating purpose in life is essential for adolescents in their quest for identity. This study explores the Profiles of Purpose in Life (PIL) among high ability adolescents and their typical counterparts. The goal is to propose the significance of PIL in areas related to human development and its link to education. Purpose in life (PIL) can be defined as a stable and generalized intention to accomplish something that is meaningful to the self and leads to engagement with some aspects of the world beyond the self. Besides profiling the purpose, the focus of this study is to specifically identify other aspects including attitude, engagement activities and support systems of PIL. A total of 599 adolescents, in which 253 of them categorized as high ability while the remaining 346 categorized as typically developing adolescents, participated in this study (N=599). The respondents, aged 16 when the study was conducted, were identified and selected through purposive sampling. A survey involving a set of questionnaires adapted from the Revised Youth Purpose Survey was administered in seven selected schools. Finding suggests that from the five types of purpose presented in the survey, most of the adolescents preferred religious purposes and aims (M= 3.60 for high ability male; 3.68 high ability female; 3.50 typical male; 3.69 typical female). This indicates that important measures should be taken to engage students in activities and programs related to religious purposes to benefit these students in the long run. With reference to engagement activities, it is found that high ability students demonstrate prominent level of engagement. This suggests that they have high commitment and focus on activities they opted for to accomplish their PIL. This study also confirms the role of family, friends and school and its contributions toward engagement activities among typical adolescents. On the other hand, there is no influence on the role of support systems from family, friends and school among high ability adolescents in their pursuit of PIL. It is likely that many factors help to explain this situation particularly from psychological and sociological perspectives such as lack of communication, issues with parenting styles, peer pressures, and conflict of interests. Implication and suggestion for future research are addressed accordingly in the last chapter including to highlight the importance of understanding PIL by approaching parents, schools and the society at the very fundamental level. Additionally, the suggestion also emphasizes on acknowledging the significant role of PIL among adolescents which contribute towards adolescents' holistic development and a dynamic development of well-being through a series of conferences, community programs and workshops.,Ph.D. |
