To make students to be successful in their careers, many factors are to be considered. These factors indicate the level of parents' education, prestigious occupation of parents, income level of parents and involvement of parents in their children's education are capable of enhancing academic performance of students. This descriptive study attempts to investigate the influence of dimensions parental background of secondary school students on their academic performance in Islamic Studies in Nigeria. The crosssectional research design was adopted for this study. The population consists of all senior secondary school students in north-central Nigeria. A total of 384 Islamic Studies students from seven states from the north-central geo-political zone of Nigeria served as participants in this study. Maslow's motivational theory, parental attachment theory, self-determination theory and Parenting styles; ecological theory and social capital theory were adapted for this study. This study was a quantitative research; questionnaire was used as the instrument for data collection which was based on the secondary school students' parental background such as education, occupation, income and involvement. Validity and reliability of instrument were established by the opinions of experts. In addition, a pilot test was carried out by reporting the Cronbach's Alpha co-efficient for the internal consistency of the instrument. The data collected were analyzed using mean and standard deviation, t-test, correlation and multiple regressions to answer research questions and research hypotheses formulated for this study. The findings of this study generated through SPSS show that the majority of the students strongly perceived that, parental background of education, occupation, income and involvement greatly influenced their academic performance in Islamic Studies with means of 3.34 (education); 2.85 (occupation); 2.68 (income) and 3.47 (involvement). These outcomes of this study also display that there is no significant difference in scores for both male and female respondents in relation to these parental factors (education 0.09>0.05, occupation 0.29>0.05 and involvement 0.31> 0.05). It is only parental income which was shown as different between the male scores (M=23.09; SD= 4.69) and female scores (M=20.83; SD=4.74). The findings of this study indicate that there is positive correlation between parental background particularly in the aspects of education, occupation, income and academic performances in Islamic Studies. Linear multiple regression confirms that there is 52.6% of the variance explained by the parental background of education, occupation, income and involvement that influence and predict the students' academic performance in Islamic Studies.,Ph.D.-
