This study aims at exploring ESL learners' use of communication strategies (CS) to compensate for their insufficient linguistic repertoire and enhance the online discussion (OLD) via Facebook (FB) group platform. It attempts to look into the communication problems learners encountered and to understand how the OLD via FB facilitates learners in enhancing their interaction in English. As a multi-case single site case study, an intact group comprising 27 learners taking a communication course at a public university was selected, using a purposive sampling procedure. Ten voluntary learners were sample within the case for a more in-depth investigation of the phenomenon. Five-pronged data collection techniques were employed: the threaded OLD scripts, interviews, retrospective sessions, reflective journal and questionnaire. All data were descriptively analyzed by thematic coding using NVivo 8.0 program, and constantly compared and contrast for triangulation and drawing conclusions. Reliability and validity of data were enhanced by member and peer expert checking, audit trail and triangulation procedures. Thematic analysis revealed learners' employment of an array of CS when completing the OLD task - digital media, discourse tone, direct, indirect, paralinguistic, interactional and other self-initiated strategies. Digital media, paralinguistic strategies and direct strategies were among the most highly employed CS. Digital media, namely the online translators (Google Translate) and FB features (tagging and "like" button) appeared to be plentiful. Findings disclosed a high degree of paralinguistic strategies i.e onomatopoeia, substitution and emoticons. The direct strategies showed an abundance of literal translation and approximation. The participants highlighted their communication problems as having lacked vocabulary, grammatical knowledge and difficulties in constructing sentences. OLD via FB was perceived as being facilitative in enhancing learners' interaction by boosting their self-confidence, expanding vocabulary, providing a platform for language practice and producing better quality responses. Utilizing FB in a pedagogically sound approach could benefit the learners in practicing the language. Classroom instructions could facilitate an effective use of CS to further enhance learners' OLD. Practical guidelines for learners and teachers as users and moderators are also proposed as a contribution to the study.,Ph.D-
