This study explored the practices that teachers employed in promoting sight vocabulary development among ESL students with autism. The first aspect being examined was helpful practices in teaching and supporting sight vocabulary in the classrooms that include students with autism. Secondly, the ways in which students with autism learned sight vocabulary were also explored. Participants in this study included four English language teachers and four students with autism. Therefore, a multiple case study was used to understand the phenomenon. Data included classroom field notes, interviews, and reviews of documents. Findings indicated that teachers used explicit teaching to teach sight vocabulary. Next, practices that teachers found helpful were those that incorporated concrete stimuli in instructions. Teachers practices in supporting sight vocabulary development were those that embodied humanistic language teaching elements. The use of L1 was also noted to be a promising factor in facilitating sight vocabulary learning among ESL students with autism. Findings also suggested that ESL students with autism learn sight vocabulary through: i) spelling check, ii) translating word, iii) associating word picture, iv) using words in their own sentences, v) engaging frequently with task, vi) asking teacher, and vii) asking friends. Based on the findings, guidelines for teaching and learning sight vocabulary were proposed. The study identified the need for a combination of humanistic language teaching and behavioural principles of teaching and learning in promoting sight vocabulary development among ESL students with autism.,PhD-
