dc.description | The study of tawhid and tariqah in the contemporary context as an inseparable discipline has been neglected. Both concepts are comprehended as two different disciplines by the Malay Muslim. The narrow perception of tariqah and its role in the development of the state, religion, and worldly affairs has resulted in its misconception as passive, personal, and exclusive. Furthermore, the contamination of tariqah with deviant teachings renders its concept with negative connotations. Thus, the practice of tariqah in implanting the fundamentals of tawhid has not been seriously considered as an important element in generating a true Muslim character. Wan Sulaiman Wan Sidek, a 19th Century Malay Sufi scholar was educated in Mecca. He was known to have propagated the teaching of tawhid and tariqah as an inseparable discipline in his epistles. He acknowledged the significance of tariqah in instilling the foundations of tawhid from the conceptual to the experiential level. Thus, this study aims to examine Wan Sulaiman Wan Sidek's background and his contributions. The study analyses his teaching in tawhid, his perception of the tariqah, and his practices in the Naqshabandiah Mujaddidiah Ahmadiah Order. The study identifies the relevancy of the integrated approach between tawhid and tariqah as an inextricable discipline within the blueprint of the school of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamacah. To this end, the study employs historical and content analysis. This consists of collecting data through documentation, interviews, and observations. Wan Sulaiman's teaching in tawhid and Naqshabandi practices has been analysed according to the basic teachings of the Qur'an, Hadith, authentic Sufi literatures and prominent Sufi viewpoints. The findings show that Wan Sulaiman is a progressive and open minded 19th Century Malay Sufi scholar. He contributed to the development of the society, state, and worldly affairs within the framework of shari cah. His teaching of tawhid is embroidered with the Sufi's thought of Husayn b.cAli al-Waciz al-Kashifi (d.937H/1531M) and Ahmad b cAbd al-Ahad al-Sirhindi (d.1034H/1624M) of al-Maturidi's school. His perception of tariqah is regarded as active, public, and inclusive. His practices in the Naqshabandiah Mujaddidiah Ahmadiah Order are not against the theological and shari cah principles approved by the majority of prominent Sufi scholars. Wan Sulaiman's application of the tariqah as a basis for an educational method in instilling tawhid is appropriate according to the sharicah. Moreover, his integrated teaching of tawhid and tariqah as an inextricable discipline is in line with the principle of the school of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamacah.,Ph.D | - |
