dc.description | This study is entitled "Identity in the Novels of Ghazi al-Qusaybi: A Semiotic Analysis" specifically related to the function of novel in recording reality and its related issues. The function of novel also gives way to expression to impart ideas and studies related to the components of human psychology through quotations in the novel. In this regard, this study concentrates on a Saudi literary figure, Ghazi al- Qusaybi who has contributed various novels, poems and short stories to the Arab Library. The problem of this study stems from the view of the importance of the identity study through some novels written by Ghazi al-Qusaybi so as to expound some important manifestations in the novels. The objective of this study is to illuminate the identity of the writer Ghazi al-Qusaybi and his literary position; and crystallize the character identity, novel elements, aesthetic characteristics and semiotic forms in three novels Shuqqah al-ḥurriyyah, al-cUsfūriyyah and Abū Shallākh al-Barmā’ī. This study relies on historical, deductive, and descriptive approaches as well as semiotic theory. The approaches are undertaken in the study of some aspects of the history and life of al-Qusaybi besides the rise of Saudi novel genre; the deduction from the novel elements and aesthetic characteristics in the three novels of Ghazi al- Qusaybi; the analysis of the novel elements; and the explanation of the identity and characteristics of the novel characters. As of the application to the texts of the novels, it is done through semiotic theory with regards to coordination, symbols and indications, and by explaining the aspects of significance of symbols used in the texts of the novel. This study comes up with some conclusions, and the most important thing in Shuqqah al-ḥurriyyah is the representation of Arab people, political thought, psychological identity, religious identity and feminine identity. Meantime, alcUsfūriyyah concentrates on psychological, political, literary and religious identities. Abū Shallākh al-Barmā’ī stresses on child, social and political identities. In the three novels, there are some aesthetic characteristics seen in the use of terms, dialects and language styles. Otherwise, the story plot in Shuqqah al-ḥurriyyah is coherent and organised, in al-cUsfūriyyah loose and organised, and in Abū Shallākh al-Barmā’ī loose and organised. The contribution of this study is the use of semiotic theory in disentangling and analysing symbols, significances and indications in the literary works attempting to elucidate the content of the thought, identity and aesthetic elements.,Ph.D | - |
